PLACES OF INTEREST:
- The Colca canyon:
This canyon whose altitude is 3,400 m over the bottom of the
valley and is more than 100 km long is considered one of the deepest in the
planet.
- Cruz del Condor Viewpoint ("Mirador de la Cruz del Cóndor"):
48 km from Chivay
and at an altitude of 3,700 m above sea level you can see the flight of the
majestic condor next to a 1,200 m deep abyss.
- Thermal baths:
Thermal-medicinal waters are found along the valley (Chivay,
Yanque, Callalli, etc.). The water temperature reaches up to 85º C.
- Terraces:
The Colca is the biggest valley with terraced agriculture in Peru;
there are approximately 40 farming sq. miles.
- Colonial monuments:
There are 16 colonial churches along the valley.
- Archeological remains:
Pumunuta, Chininia, Uyo uyu, Malata de Ichupampa,
Marcapampa, Mollepuncu, Uscallacta, Choquetico, Houses of the Yanque and the Lari
Caciques, Hanging tombs of Madrigal and Choquetico Maca.
- Flora and fauna:
Along the road from Arequipa to Chivay, there are abundant
guallatas, ibis, vizcacha, flamingos, condors, vicuñas, alpacas, llamas, tarucas,
a variety of cactus, quinoa areas, etc.
